There is no better way to increase sales than through food photography. The more appealing your food photos are, the more likely your customers will want to taste and order your foods! Choosing to sell food on the Dishefs marketplace gives you access to some of the best photo editors on the market. To help you attract more customers, we’ve compiled our editors’ most important tips below. Be sure to take a photo of your new menu items to let your customers know what to expect

Follow these simple steps to get started!

  • Use a white bowl or plate with a circular shape to place the food. Keeping the dish simple (no flowers, no colors, etc.) is advised to let the food tell the story. Dark bowls or plates are only used when photographing white foods, such as rice or yogurt.
  • It is expected that the portion of food in your photograph matches the portion of food you offer on your menu.
  • Organize the bowl by placing the food in the center.
  • Wet a paper towel and wipe the sides of the dish to remove any food splatters.
  • Add garnishes such as cilantro, lime, or nuts to the food. Make sure to only use ingredients that are in the recipe.
  • The dish should have a dark/black background. The backgrounds of the photographs do not need to be decorated. By cutting and pasting your dish onto different backgrounds, our food photography editors will help elevate the look of your dish to an all new level! Only a dark bowl or plate for white foods would require a light background.
  • Take your food pictures with a smartphone or professional camera.
  • Ensure you are directly above the food when you take the photo (without tilting the camera).
  • Keeping your camera’s lens clean will help ensure that your photos are clear and sharp.
  • It is best to take photos during the day with natural sunlight, but not in direct sunlight (otherwise you run the risk of getting overexposed photos). Make sure that no artificial lighting or lamps are used, and that the flash isn’t on.
  • Don’t crop the plate/bowl out of the picture – your customers want the entire item to be visible.
  • Get rid of shadows in your photos to make your food stand out.
  • You do not need to edit or filter any of the images in any way. You’ll have access to expert food photography editors who can enhance your photos, so we recommend leaving the editing to us – do not try to edit them or use any special filters.
  • Each photo should have a name associated with it, and it should be added to your menu (see video below).
  • It may take our team 5-7 days to edit and reupload new photos.

The following videos will further explain how you can take your own photos
