What rules and regulations apply to you?

Wherever you live in the world, there are requirements that apply to the country, state, city, and even the individual property.

Some areas, for instance, have:

  • A zoning ordinance that specifies how your space can be used
  • Taxes that apply to hosts, such as occupancy tax, value-added tax (VAT), and goods and services tax (GST)
  • There are laws that may require hosts to obtain licenses or permits, register their spaces, or get liability insurance

Listed below are several ways to find out what the rules and regulations are in your area:

1. Visit the Dishefs Help Center

You can find region-specific information about responsible hosting in the Help Center. Using these guides will give you a general idea of what hosting requirements exist in your country, state, county, or city.

2. Connect with your local government

Local governments provide information on their policies and requirements for short-term rentals on their websites. Try emailing or calling them directly if you’re having trouble finding this information online.

3. Reach out to existing Hosts

Connecting with seasoned hosts who have experience with local rules and regulations can be accomplished by contacting a local Dishefs Host Club or visiting the Community Center. The Host typically isn’t a tax or legal advisor, so you should always verify any information you receive.

4. Consult a local professional

Local lawyers or tax professionals can advise you on taxes and laws that apply to landlords/space renters in your area. When you are preparing to become a Host, these experts can help you stay compliant.

Hopefully these tips will give you a better understanding of the rules and regulations that may apply to you as a Host, and give you confidence to realize your hosting dreams.
